When Talking About a Problem Isn’t Enough: Going Deeper in Therapy

Hypnotherapy can help us look beneath the surface and understand the deeper emotional and subconscious patterns behind anxiety, triggers and recurring behaviours.
Sometimes people arrive in my therapy room already knowing a great deal about themselves. This is when Hypnotherapy in Geelong can show them what they are currently unaware of.
They know they overthink. They know they become anxious when somebody pulls away. They know they struggle with rejection, self-doubt, anger or people-pleasing.
They may even understand where some of it came from.
And yet the feeling is still there.
This is where therapy needs to go beyond simply talking about the problem.
Why can we understand a problem but still keep repeating it?
Because insight and change are not always the same thing.
Our conscious mind can understand that a situation is safe while another part of us continues to react as though it isn’t.
You might consciously know:
“My partner loves me.”
Yet still become anxious when they seem distant.
You might know:
“I am good enough.”
Yet still feel crushed by criticism.
You might understand:
“My childhood is over.”
Yet find yourself reacting to certain situations with emotions that feel much bigger than what is actually happening today.
These responses often make more sense when we become curious about the deeper emotional patterns underneath them.
What I mean by Core Focused Hypnotherapy
I describe my approach as Core Focused Hypnotherapy because I am interested in getting to the core of what is happening rather than only addressing what appears on the surface.
Talking is important. It allows me to understand your world and helps you make sense of what you’re experiencing.
But from there, I often invite clients to go deeper.
We may explore earlier experiences, emotional wounds, beliefs formed during childhood, protective parts of the personality, relationship patterns and subconscious associations that continue to influence life today.
A person isn’t simply “an anxious person.”
There is usually a story behind the anxiety.
A person isn’t simply “too sensitive.”
Something may have taught them that criticism, abandonment or rejection is dangerous.
And the person who becomes controlling, distant, angry or overly accommodating may actually be protecting a much more vulnerable part underneath.
When we find that part, the problem can begin to make much more sense.
The goal isn’t to blame the past
Going deeper does not mean endlessly analysing childhood or blaming parents.
Most parents did the best they could with the awareness and resources they had.
The purpose is understanding.
If an experience from years ago created a belief such as:
“I don’t matter.”
“I have to keep everyone happy.”
“I’m not safe.”
“I’ll be abandoned.”
“I’m not good enough.”
or
“I can’t trust people.”
that belief can quietly influence adult relationships, anxiety, self-esteem and behaviour long after the original circumstances have disappeared.
When we recognise the pattern, we have an opportunity to change our relationship with it.
Therapy should feel human
Depth also depends on the therapeutic relationship.
I don’t believe people open their deepest emotional world simply because they’re sitting in a therapy room.
They open when they feel safe, understood and not judged.
My style is relaxed and conversational, but when we find something important, I’m comfortable going deeply into it.
Sometimes there are tears.
Sometimes there is laughter.
Sometimes there is a moment where something that has been confusing for decades suddenly makes sense and a life changing breakthrough can occur.
Those moments are one of the reasons I still love this work.
Is deeper therapy right for everyone?
Not necessarily.
Sometimes what a person needs is practical support, reassurance, strategies or a safe place to talk through something happening right now.
All of those things have value.
But if you have been experiencing the same anxiety, relationship problem, trigger, negative belief or emotional pattern for years, it may be worth asking a different question:
What lies underneath this? Hypnotherapy in Geelong can show the way.
That’s where much of my work begins.
I provide psychotherapy and hypnotherapy in the Geelong region, including Belmont, Mount Duneed, Torquay and Moriac.
If you feel you understand your problem intellectually but something deeper hasn’t shifted, you’re welcome to book a session and explore what may be sitting underneath it.
